On November 9th, 2018 Universal came out with an animated version of the Christmas classic, The Grinch. Rashida Jones played the voice of Donna Who, Cameron Seely voiced Cindy- Lou Who and starring Benedict Cumberbatch as the voice of the Grinch. The movie is a new and improved animated version of the original Christmas cartoon The Grinch which came out in 1966.
The movie is about a grouchy and naive green man who has such a negative feel for Christmas. Everything that has to do with the holiday disgusts him so he lives at the top of a mountain with his dog to isolate himself from everyone else. Since he hates Christmas, his goal is to steal Christmas from those who live in Whoville. He later on comes to realize that what he did was wrong and finds warmth in his heart.
After watching the newest Grinch movie, I noticed a difference between it and the new movie. Not only was the quality of the movie better because it was computer animated, but it wasn’t entirely the same plot having Cindy Lou Who being raised by a struggling single mother. The brilliant colors, detail of the animation and the modern soundtrack provided an exciting take on the old clasic. I never knew the reason why the Grinch hated Christmas until this movie showed his sad life as an orphan. The original movie in my opinion focused more on the Grinch himself and how he stole Christmas. Unlike the new movie’s main focus of Cindy- Lou trying to find Santa to give him her wish.
I would definitely recommend others to watch this movie for the holidays. I would have preferred if the movie had come out in December since it is a Christmas movie but even still, I would rate the movie a B+. Although I enjoyed it, at times the plot seemed to jump around from the perspective of Cindy Lou and the Grinch.
