On September 12, 2018 Brett Kavanaugh became the most talked about man on national television. Brett Kavanaugh was recently nominated by president Donald Trump to be the next Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the U.S.
Not many in the U.S. were happy with the decision due to him being accused of sexual assault. His accuser, Christine Blasey Ford wrote a letter during the summer explaining how he had tried forcing himself on her at a high school party decades ago. Ford went public with her story and testified in front of the Senate Judiciary Committee. While listening to her testimony, one could clearly hear the fear in her voice.
Kavanaugh pled not guilty to these accusations and no further investigation was done. Despite this, Kavanaugh was still promoted to Supreme Court Justice, which caused significant controversy. Some claimed that Ford was lying about her testimony and was questioned because she waited too long. Those who have experienced sexual assault are most likely to keep quiet because they fear the consequences. One being the fear that no one will believe them especially if it was years ago.
I personally believe that the accusations made against Brett Kavanaugh should’ve been taken much more seriously. A further investigation should’ve been done because it would’ve led to a time of pause for all sides interested. People in power and money seem to have a way of getting away with crimes -and that is wrong. As a teenage girl, it terrifies me that I live in a world where a female's opinion and voice is always dismissed by powerful men.
