Estancia boys soccer beat Costa Mesa High School 2-1 on January 9th, at Estancia’s Jim Scott Stadium.
Throughout the first half both teams were trying to score on one another, but Mesa scored their first goal of the night. Mesa’s goalkeeper continued to come up with big saves preventing Estancia from scoring on multiple chances. With the half ending with Mesa up 1-0.
Estancia opened up the second half with more aggressive play. Senior defense man, Brian Alvarez earned a yellow card as he explains, “protecting my player was what I had to do. He had no chance to win a fight against someone who was bigger and stronger than him.” After play continued, Senior forward, Miguel Peña scored two goals during the second half putting Estancia on the board with a 2-1 lead. Peña remarked, “as one of the captains I felt pressured to do what I had done previously, to score the first goal.”
Estancia went on to hold the lead and win the Battle of the Bell game. The Eagles who are 3-1-1 in league will play again on January 18th against Saddleback High School at home with a 5:00 p.m. kickoff.
